5:00 pm
sources telling us he was injured from last night. we don't know the extent of those injuries. so it is possible that he just can't get out of that boat. but this is at 67 franklin street if you are just joining us in watertown in a residential neighborhood. a lot has -- >> shepard: it's 8:00 on the east coast, 5:00 p.m. on the west coast. i'm shepard smith in boston and this is continuing coverage of breaking news from watertown, massachusetts. where the latest word is that authorities, we believe, have suspect number 2 in the boston marathon bombing surrounded at 57 -- on a street in watertown, massachusetts in the backyard in a boat which was covered by a canvas. it's now the belief that that suspect was injured in the shootout which happened overnight last night and now authorities are trying to bring this man into custody. we have every reason to believe that this situation is quickly winding down and that the nightmare that has been the last five days in
5:01 pm
boston may be, at least this chapter soon over. it's bill o'reilly's hour on the fox news channel. and now tonight on fox broadcast stations across the station. bill, good evening. >> bill: shepard, thank you very much. this is a special edition of the o'reilly factor. it's a dramatic story line today and extending into the night in boston. anything could happen at any time. so what we are going to do is pop in and out of the live coverage up there. we are going to go back to our affiliate channel 25 in boston doing a very very good job. they have got their people very close to the second suspect. the first one as you know is dead. all right, his brother. and the second one is wounded. apparently lying in a boat, surrounded by police. police will get him. it's just a matter of when. so let's go back to fox 25 in boston. >> the officer on scene was saying he is inside the boat. he is inside the boat. there was a canvas top. he appeared to be puncturing holes in the canvas top and right after that, is when people like
5:02 pm
paul sutherland heard multiple shots on scene. >> when your friend there paul you sullivan said that all hell broke loose. >> absolutely. he described it as up to 20 shots, just pop pop pop pop pop one after the other. >> jared, you are saying that the authorities will take these flash bang grenades and actually throw them toward the boat or in the backyard to scare the suspect? that's a typical tactic? >> it is a common tactic to startle somebody. i'm not saying that's exactly what was done there. i'm obviously not there. i can tell that you usually generally what they're for is to like if you kick open a door and throw them in and startle people and go inside. you create that diversion. clearly there wasn't a diversion needed here well after the fact of all those shots being fired. >> all right. jared. thank you. we're going to ask you to stay right there. let's go live to fox 25 bob
5:03 pm
ward. bob? >> hey there, guys. just a few moments ago while we were talking to you on the phone still trying to get our live shots all together. hopefully you can see me okay. i just heard a series of explosions maybe in the last 15 to 20 minutes. have not heard any explosions since then but as many as 15 explosions coming from the area where we believe suspect number 2 is hold up. i'm told that he is surrounded. last i was able to check with anyone he was still alive and that he was hiding underneath, as you heard, just moments ago tarp in a boat. now, just want to, if i can for a minute. this is a press area. we are a good distance away from where this is all unfolding. it's unfolding in that direction probably about 200 yards away from us. behind a house here in watertown. and we were just trying to watch what was going on and then all of a sudden without warning we heard a series of explosions, two or three. then a pause, then another
5:04 pm
two or three, then a longer pause, and then that kind of kept up for about a minute, minute and a half. now, we don't know what the cause of these explosions are, if they are flash bombs employed by the state police. we do know that they were sending a robot in to try to see what was going on. the reason for that, obviously, is that suspect number 2 he helped plant those two bombs at the boston marathon which exploded. bombs were found in watertown. pipe bombs and a pressure cooker bomb were found in watertown overnight. and and we know just how dangerous this guy can be. also overnight in the fire fight with police, in which suspect number 2's brother was killed, he was found, according to reports, with an ied, improvised explosive device, strapped to him. i have been reporting all day there is no reason to think that suspect number 2 also wouldn't have an ied somehow attached to him. that's why immediately police got here, we heard
5:05 pm
gunshots earlier. about 30 gunshots. we raced down here and then the police set up this perimeter, they got it surrounded and then they started moving in after that we don't know what the source of those explosions are. as i said, i heard about 15 of them, a series of them going off in the area where the man who is believed to be suspect number 2 is trapped right now. >> bob, we are looking at live pictures here of the street here that is in question. of course, this is 67 franklin street where -- location of where the suspect is. i mean, no shortage of police here. it's incredible the amount of law enforcement presence that is here to watch this, what appears to be final act play out. >> yeah. that's right. it's incredible because we are outside the perimeter that was searched all day long. i mean those 20 blocks in watertown and cambridge that he we were telling you about all day long. that was over this direction. but this is over here. so, if he was here all day he was outside the perimeter where the police
5:06 pm
have been searching for him all day long. i find that really interesting. right after the 5:30 press conference that where the state police said well we didn't get him, we're going to start pulling things back, almost immediately, i'm talking like within half an hour, we hear the gunfire and then everything starts erupting over here in this direction. now, we did have a camerthat we moment that those explosions were going off, and we hope to be able to turn that around for you fairly quickly. we had to move our live truck. we had to move all kinds of things, folks so please bear with us. we are trying to get those images out to you so you can hear for yourself what i heard out here when i was on the phone doing one of our live reports. we will have that for you soon. >> bob, exactly how close are you to this house and to the scene with all the law enforcement and could you actually feel the explosions when they went off? >> oh, absolutely i heard the explosions. i am a good distance away from the house where this is all going down. i'm about two or 300 yards away from where i believe that that is all taking
5:07 pm
place. so, but i am close enough to actually hear those explosions. there was no mistaking what that was. those were explosions whether they be flash bombs or something else, i don't know. i'm not a ballistics expert. those were exmolestations taking place, not gunfire in rapid fire sequence. two or three, pause, four or five for several more. minute and a half. i hope to have that video for you so you can hear it for yourself. it was pretty dramatic. earlier -- go ahead, i'm sorry. >> we did get some video in from a viewer who sent it in and we did hear the bullets being fired, the shots being fired. we also heard the reaction from here it is, listen. >> oh my god. [explosions] >> did you just hear that? >> yeah.
5:08 pm
[gunfire] >> holy, holy. holy, holy, holy. >> bob, were you able to hear that? >> is that the gunfire from just a short time ago or is that from overnight? >> no. that is the gunfire that prompted -- that when police got on scene. that is what they first heard. that was a witness account. that was in daylight. >> yeah, i absolutely heard that mark. and i was a couple of city blocks away. we were kind of wrapping things up. i was on the phone trying to find out some more information from my sources. and all of a sudden we heard that barrage of gunfire. and it never seemed to end. you know, i wasn't counting each bullet as it was fired. i said as many as 30 maybe was even more when i just heard that tape it sounded even more intense than what i actually heard. i absolutely heard that that was a good from this location. that's where i was when i could hear the gunfire. then i'm a lot closer for the explosions that i
5:09 pm
heard. and i will have to go back and count those. but i'm going to say anywhere from 10 to 15 explosions that we heard just, i don't know, about half an hour ago now. >> bob, we have some new video that we want to air with the sound of the explosions and the gunfire. let's take a listen. [gunfire] [rapid fire gunfire] >> 20 to 30 shots fired just a short time ago. near 67 franklin street in watertown. a suspect number 2 hold up in a boat behind that address in the backyard. he is surrounded. today if he was injured this morning. when a gun battle ensued in
5:10 pm
another gunfire. >> bill: you are looking at live pictures from watertown, massachusetts where they have the second suspect in the boston marathon, terror bombing surrounded. he is wounded. and they just have to be very careful because he could have explosives wired into him. there is a robot on the scene. and we're going to go in and out here as we get information we will take you back there. now, let me bring you up to date about what has happened in the last 17 hours. first of all my opening statement tonight: hell likely has a new resident. 26-year-old tamerlan tsarnaev shot by police this morning in the suburb of boston. he and his 19-year-old brother dzhokhar were identified by the fbi yesterday as the prime suspects in the bombing last monday that killed three and injured 170. now, shortly after the fbi sent those pictures you just saw out to the world, the two men began a series of bizarre moves. here is the time line. at 10:20 last night.
5:11 pm
the two suspects were confronted by a massachusetts institute of technology police officer who was responding to a robbery call in cambridge. the suspects allegedly shot 26-year-old sean collier dead. soon after that, the brothers hijacked a mercedes suv but released the driver unharmed after stealing $800 from him. the victim told police the suspects were bragging about being bombers. around 11:00 p.m. last night, police spotted the stolen mercedes and a chase began ending in watertown, a suburb 8 miles from boston. the suspects and police exchanged more than 200 rounds of gunfire and the brothers also threw explosives at the cops. one officer, 33-year-old richard donahue was seriously wounded. and the older brother, tamerlan tsarnaev shot
5:12 pm
dead. his brother dzhokhar escaped on foot even as police shut down neighborhoods. just about an hour ago all hell broke loose again as a neighbor in watertown called police and said "i see blood on the shed in my backyard." police responded. you may have seen it live on shepard smith. cars from everywhere converged on the site. there is a boat in the backyard with canvas covering the boat. and that is where the suspect now lies, wounded, according to the authorities. once again, it's a very difficult situation because of all of the explosive components here. don't know what he has. you go in, boom! , everybody goes up. this is a mark of a terrorist. this is what these people do. so, let's go to watertown. let's take you back there where fox news correspondent mike tobin is standing by as well as fox
5:13 pm
news producer chris laible. anything you can add to what i just said. >> explosion may be a strong word i describe them as pops. what they remind me of is the israeli bomb disposal robot that when they find a suspicious package the robot would approach the suspicious package and hit it with a small charge. that's what the sound reminded me of. we heard several of those out here. and, in fact, when the helicopter was overhead, the helicopter was loud enough to drown out the sound of the explosion. that's what happened. shortly after, as you mentioned, all the chaos broke out here. the chaos broke out after the order to shelter was lifted. people came out of their homes. that would be consistent with the story that the lady saw the bloody clothes, she saw that the door was open to the cabin. she saw something was disturbed with the boat. next thing we knew we saw a couple of police cars
5:14 pm
screaming in the direction nor and more and more and pretty soon it was quite obvious that something was up and something was big, bill. >> bill: mike, how far away are you from what we are seeing now the live shot of the police in the neighborhood surrounding the guy? how far are are you away? >> i'm at the back end of the police in the neighborhood. everything that is surrounding that ground zero the place on franklin street i'm about three and a half blocks away from that. >> bill: all right, chris laible producer of fox news you can add anything to the conversation right now. >> bill, we are actually on our way to try to get closer to the scene. we are about a mile away. when we heard the gunshots. about 20, maybe two dozen or more go off. we were interviewing neighbors residents of watertown that had recently come out of their homes to walk their dogs, stretch their legs after being stuck indoors for 24 hours. and, you know, we were interviewing a man about what it was like, whether he was still nervous when we heard the gunshots and ran back to our position.
5:15 pm
saw dozens of cop cars fly by us. there is a bomb squad right by where our old location was. and, yeah, the scene is pretty settled right now. it sounds like most of it is about a mile from where we were. it's still pretty intense. >> bill: now what we are doing is having a waiting game. i want you to come back to me on camera here for a element no. what we're going to do is upstairs you're monitoring when they have new information out in boston at our affiliate, our local affiliate, tell me and i will -- there is the boat by the way, okay, that they believe that the suspect is in under a tarp wounded, bleeding in that boat. but, again, you can't go in and get him right away until you know the extent of what kind of explosives or arms he has got on him. he doesn't want to give up. it's all over. but this is a 19-year-old obviously deranged individual. that's what you are dealing with here. i have got geraldo rivera standing by with me here in the studio.
5:16 pm
and people want to know about these two brothers. they are chechens, however one of them is an american citizen, right? >> naturalized american citizen. he was naturalized ironically on 9/11 in 2012. the younger brother, the survivor. >> bill: the 19-year-old, the guy in the boat right now became an american citizen and sworn in 9/11, 2012 ironic. the older brother we understand from authorities went back to chechnya last year, which is a hot bed of terrorism. and what i am hearing i have talked to a couple of the intel guys working in the u.s. government. they believe now he was trained back there as an explosives man and came back to massachusetts with this in mind to blow people up. this is what the intel is right now. >> the story is even more intriguing when the fbi admits that in 2010 they actually questioned the older brother, the slain older brother, the probable
5:17 pm
master mine tamerlan the 26-year-old in 2010 at the request of a foreign government. what foreign government we don't know. we assume russia. and, yet, bill, in 2012 tamerlan travels back if to russia to moscow and stays for 20 months. it is possible that is the period that this american-reared muslim terrorist from chechnya learned how to build this bomb. because the bombs that they assembled were quite sophisticated. >> bill: that's right. >> they had timers and they could manage near simultaneously explosions. >> bill: you say he went to moscow. i thought he went to chechnya. >> no, no. he went to moscow. where he went from moscow we don't know. >> bill: reports are he wound his way down there why that is important is auto divide has training bases in check that. they train people down there. free fire zone. rebellious province of russia. it's all muslim. and these boys are muslim
5:18 pm
by the way and we have an obligation to report that. we don't know exactly what their motivation is do you know this, they wanted to kill innocent americans just to kill them. just to kill them. that's the mark of jihad. >> i agree. the brutal bitter war going on. >> bill: okay. should we go back to boston? is that what you are telling me up there? okay. eric shawn, fox news correspondent has some new information so let's go to eric. >> yeah, bill, we heard these blasts when they happened about 20 minutes or so ago. catherine herridge, our national security correspondent in washington reporting to us that her sources and fbi saying that they are taking this very slowly. they are taking this approach to him methodically because they do not know if he indeed does have a suicide vest or perhaps is rigged as a booby trap with any explosive material or bombs in that boat. and, of course, one of the
5:19 pm
major priorities here is to try to take him alive. so that way they can certainly try to backtrack all this information on who may have supported them where they're connections are. who could have helped them. whether this was part of a much larger plot. also fox news confirming, getting confirmation from the justice department that his older brother tamerlan did travel overseas, leaving here, boston logan for moscow in january of last year. spent six months there. came back in july of 2012, traveling on his kyrgyzstan passport. so obviously the questions would be did he go to a training camp? who did he meet? what type of plot is this and getting back to what's happening at the boat right now. earlier today we were am cambridge, massachusetts down the street from harvard by the house where suspect number one lives. turns out that authorities say they found some bombs, explosive material. there was also another one
5:20 pm
of those bombs, the type that was used pressure cooker in the first attacks on monday also discovered. but, bill, the big question here friends of dzhokhar told me earlier today when he was in high school cambridge high school. wrestle team, loved sports, normal kid, used to hang out and smoke pot with them and listen to rap music. the big question for our country tonight, what we have to faces a americans is this. what happened? how did these young people turn from being these type of teenagers into now accused terrorists who want to come and kill in their view the infidels. that is a major issue for a nation to deal with tonight. it has all boiled down to one young man on it cold evening here in boston hiding under a tarp in a boat apparently in the backyard of a house. >> bill: that's why they are doing everything they
5:21 pm
can to take him alive so they can ask him the questions that you just posed. what is the motivation here? are you part of a bigger network? are you being paid? were you trained specifically to do this? and all of that it's funny, geraldo, and we will go back to eric as events warrant. you always hear, always, and you have been covering crime for decades the same thing, i'm so shocked. he was such a nice guy. na na na na. psychopaths come in all kinds of containers. and these guys to me this has the earmark of older brother being a hard core terrorist and then he comes back and co-ops the younger brother and says you are going to help me do this because allah wants us to do it or whatever the reason is. and these two guys go out. i wouldn't be surprised if there are the people that they are in contact with it's almost inconceivable that the kid would go back, the 26-year-old would go back to russia for six months, all right?
5:22 pm
that's not a vacation and then come back here and then a foreign government would warn the fbi. a foreign government picking up the phone to warn the fbi hey, you better watch this guy. >> and the fbi questioned him. >> bill: right. so this isn't some kind of misguided people. this is a terror cell. >> it's clearly -- i think what happened here tamerlan the older brother, now dead brother clearly radicalized. he became a devout muslim. he became very fundamentalist. became very scornful of american society. he clearly radicalized his skateboard riding, pot smoking, rap music music listening to brother. in terms of capability, this was entirely within their capacity. is it doesn't take more than a couple hundred dollars to build those weapons. >> bill: you have got to be trained to do it. go back to eric shawn he has noah new info for us. what's up, eric? >> new bedford police say they have three people in
5:23 pm
custody. new bedford south of here on the way toward the cape. these are three people after executing a search warrant at the rock dale complex. apartment complex that's used for students at university of massachusetts dartmouth. that is where dzhokhar attended classes. and there were reports that he even was on that campus this week after the terrorist bombing. so police in new bedford have issued a federal search warrant according to our reports to search the premises of the suspect dzhokhar is believed to have resided at that apartment at some point. recently so this may have been his school dormitory. so now we have some more people into the mix here, bill, three people brought into custody for questioning. they are not called suspects or determined to be suspects. >> bill: got to ask them questions. eric, let me clarify a couple of things here. there were two brothers, the 26-year-old who lived in cambridge, here naferred
5:24 pm
the 12-9d-year-old in the boat surrounded. he was going to the university of university of massachusetts at dartmouth. dartmouth is a town south of the border. it's where the big state prison is in massachusetts. now, the authorities out of new bedford, fbi, i'm sure. went into the dorm where he was living. he had to have, you know he, probably had roommates. those are the three guys or three people they are talking to now. to find out what they knowthis. it's all starting to fall in place very, very quickly. here, geraldo is another interesting question that will be investigating in the days to come. how did these guys get here. in chechnya, you know, they are muslims from a war-torn area which is unstable. they come with their father they are all here. the uncle is in maryland and the uncle is teed off at the kids. father saying it's a frame
5:25 pm
up. is he a loon. if we have time i will play you a sound bite. how do they get here? >> political refugees from kyrgyzstan. they can apply for temporary visas to come to the united states. they were approved around 2002. the family comes here. indeed, the young boy wasn't even born in chechnya. muslim republican south asia. north of south afghanistan. there are many chechnya descendants people helping the jihad against us in afghanistan, tribal territories even in libya, syria, iraq, bill, check that has been because of the brutal bitter war against christian russia, the muslim population there has been a -- the young man from that ethnic group have very often been radicalized. how they come here? they came here as young people you met the uncle and aunt on television. >> bill: i understand they asked for political asylum. >> that's how they grew up
5:26 pm
here. >> bill: they were granted that and they come here. that's not unique and it's not easy to get political asylum to come here. millions people apply. we have translater in afghanistan right now who want it because they fear when the u.s. pulls out the taliban is going to cut off their heads. it's not easy to get that here is another interesting wrinkle on this. when a foreign government says hey, you better watch this guy. >> in 2010. >> bill: yeah, i mean, then, every flag in the world should go up and then he goes back for six months and comes back they have to know who he is. he has got to be on a watch list. they run it through a computer. i just think there is going to be a lot more to this story in the days to come. >> the fbi will have to explain how in 2010 they gave him a green pass. how they gave him an all clear after being requested by the foreign government to check him out. >> we are not monday morning quarterbacking here
5:27 pm
ladies and gentlemen at all. all we are doing is raising questions that are on your mind. >> bill: shepard smith is in boston as you know. let's go to shep for what he has right now. shep shell bill, thanks, this began just as "the fox report" was cranking up tonight. and we got word from police there that they may have somebody surrounded. so wfxt fox for boston is live and on this continuing and breaking now in prime time. let's listen. >> in indication that they were ready and willing to move in if something happened. >> mike, it seems fairly quiet right now since we heard the last explosions, some 8 to 10 explosions. some 15 or 20 minutes ago. clearly they are coming up with a strategy right now. how long do you think these guys will wait before they make another move? >> i mean, it's so hard to know, sarah, but i can guarantee you they are moving very cautiously the reason they are moving so cautiously is because of that very real concern that this guy has explosives strapped to himself and
5:28 pm
that he could harm not only himself. >> i want to ask you this as well. ask about. something used today. again found outside the perimeter. is that something they could take up now fly over and understand whether or not or had they used it earlier? could they have used it earlier to try to determine where he was and possibly spotted him in that boat? >> it's certainly a possibility. these guys have all the technology that you name it you got it. they have the capability to do it. i don't have specific information on whether they used it but i can only believe they are using every possible resource that they have. det.ox 25 mike bow we appreciate it keep you on the line here as we take a look at the video brought into the newsroom, sent into our newsroom by eyewitnesses on the scene.
5:29 pm
this is gunshots that rang out in watertown this evening. [gunfire] >> there you have it. unbelievable developments tonight. then you had gunshots ring out. officers obviously on the scene. they have got the person held up in a boat in the backyard. this is 67 franklin street. neighbors were just 20 minutes earlier said you could go out and lockdown has been lifted. some people were out and they captured this type of video. how disturbing for them and how nerve wracking at the same time to hear gunshots wring out once again right after they were told that all clear was given to a point. they want you to be diligent but they said you didn't have to stay in your home anymore. the folks in watertown have been in their homes for so long last night to today. >> it was so interesting at that press conference with the governor as we listened to this video of shots
5:30 pm
being fired some 20 to 30 shots fired. just a short time ago. some 1 hour ago. and about 20 minutes after the governor had held his press conference. it was quiet there at the press conference but then suddenly the entire team at that press conference swiftly moved to the new scene on franklin street. at 67 franklin street where the suspect. >> shepard: it all did happen very quickly in watertown tonight and here with waiting to learn now is what is the status of this suspect? what is the status of the overriding investigation? we're waiting to hear from the governor and the mayor in just moments from now and we have that as the o'reilly factor moves on and live coverage continues from watertown throughout the night. i'm shepard smith. bill back to you. >> bill: thank you very much. stand by for us. we will go back to shepard and our other correspondents when they have something new and that's the name of the game here. let's bring in our pal howie car from boston. howie is a radio talk show host on wrko he has been

5:31 pm
talking to the folks feeling all of the stuff all day right on the story. what's the headline for you tonight. you know, apart from the fact they got this guy surrounded and thank god for that. and they will have him in custody soon. what else in there that you feel is important that the folks around the country should know? >> well, i think, bill, that's a good question. i would say the headline would be no good deed goes unpunished. here it is again, uncle sam does a favor for somebody. we bring these people. in even though they are radical muslims, we have to figure they don't much like us, we bring them in, make them political refugees and as you know if you are a political refugee that makes you eligible immediately for welfare. you don't have to wait for any -- in any lines. you don't have to wait for the anchor baby. you immediately become a welfare recipient. and what have we gotten here? we have gotten these people have come over here and they have apparently developed this overwhelming

5:32 pm
hatred for us. the mother has become a professional shoplifter apparently. she actually stole $1,600 worth of clothes last year from lord and taylor ironically not the store where the cameras were. >> bill: i didn't know that was she arrested and convicted of that? >> yes she was as far as i know, yes. $1,600. at the mall. and then you have these kids, you know, acting like this. it's just very frustrating for people up here. and i think people across the country. we try to do favors for people. you know, bring them into the country. nobody really -- nobody asked anybody in massachusetts do you want some chech thans to chechnyas to come into the country? we weren't asked but we have to pick up the tab and then they turn around and do. this it's extremely frustrating. they have not only ruined marathon day, this group has ruined the entire week. they have destroyed

5:33 pm
people's lives. all sorts of people who were running in the marathon are now going to be running in the wheelchair marathon. it's extremely frustrating. >> bill: absolutely. we are going to talk if we have time in this hour because as you are seeing on the screen ladies and gentlemen, there is a developing story and we are trying to get this guy dzhokhar tsarnaev out of this boat. and into police custody. and they don't want to kill him because they want to find out why he did what he did and if there was anybody else that was happening him. howie, do the presence and the fbi, i think they did a pretty darn good job even though this guy was able to run away last night when his brother was killed in the shootout overnight. he was able to escape on foot. it's dark, it's watertown, he knows the area, whatever. do you concur the cops have done a good job here? >> yeah, i think they have. i was really surprised when they came up with the audio and/or excuse me the video yesterday. i thought it would take them days if not weeks to come up with -- >> --
quote
5:34 pm
>> bill: the fbi was really sharp on that. that's right. >> they were. i think a lot of reason that we had all of these problems with, you know he, the incorrect stories in the boston media yesterday was because we were relying on the local cops. and we couldn't -- we didn't have any sources inside the joint terrorism task force. they also acted very professionally that way, bill. they kept their mouths shut. they just went about their job and they got it done. they really impressed all of us in boston. as you know, the fbi does not have a great reputation here in the city. >> bill: no. now they are going to be under fire because as we were discussing with geraldo rivera, this guy was tipped by a government, heard believes its russia. i think that's probably right although there is an outside chance it might be israel. the fbi got a tip on this guy. that you are looking at right now. tamerlan tsarnaev that he was a radical and that he travels back to russia for six months he comes back here and the fbi says he is clean.

5:35 pm
obviously he wasn't. so the bureau is going to have to basically explain that. now, as far boston is concerne. is there a vengeance in the air now howie? you know, we are getting mixed feelings out of the town. it's a tough town. boston is strong. vengeance in the air? >> yeah, as i think i told you the last time i was on, bill, people are talking about the death penalty. i had a democratic state rep on my show tonight. he is reintroduced the death penalty legislation again. you know, it's, again, it's been very frustrating for the people here to watch these killers get life sentences and they say life without parole but that just means life until there is another liberal governor and then they get a come come come moon this. >> bill: geraldo has information for us. >> remember the dichotomy here. the radical older brother. the kind of hippy wrestler, gets a scholarship, i don't

know what the welfare situation that howie carr was references. >> bill: they got housing money and they did get government assistance. >> dzhokhar won a $2,500 scholarship senior year at cambridge latin which is a pretty darn good public school. >> bill: it's a good school. >> going down to the university of massachusetts at dart mouth: i don't know i understand in his freshman year he in college he was less friendly than he had been in high school indicating that the raddization, the muslim fund mentionist ideals that the old brother tamerlan inculcating began to take hold. when he came back, tamerlan, it is also interesting to note that's when he began putting his videos on youtube. that's where he began referencing these radical imams. that's where he began truly to get hard core in terms it of his ideology, his hatred of the west. his hatred of decadent

american society. he was clearly like major hasan and -- hasan was born here, these guys born overseas. one was 13 years old the other was 8 years old. >> fort hood shooter. >> correct. >> bill: the family is a fractured family, and this is another important element of this story. you have got the father who made a statement today, i think to the associated press, that this is a big frame up and his kids didn't do it even while the kids are throwing hand grenades out the window. the father is a loon. he is it in russia. the mother as howie carr just reported got some kind of criminal beef up in massachusetts against her. there is a very responsible, i guess, uncle in maryland who has condemned the two boys. and then there is some kind of crazy aunt running around down there saying it's a frame up as well. >> sister in new york. >> bill: whole extended family came on over here. >> some are in canada. >> bill: i think you are right. it's increasing

radicalization. it comes back if you are tipped on this guy, didn't the fbi look at these youtube things and didn't they put it all together that this guy was not, you know, a safe guy? >> my impression is there was no social media activity by the time the fbi interviewed him in 2010. two years later goes and spends the six months in russia. now, remember, i cannot overemphasize the bitterness of the chechen muslim people at the russian christian people. it could be they just conflate all the christian west with the enemy, the decadent enemy. but this guy, tamerlan, the 26-year-old clearly was also an engineering student, remember, at bunker hill community college, so the expertise to build the pressure cooker bomb, we have seen these pressure cooker bombs, bill in marketplaces throughout south asia. they are very commonly sold and used as terror weapons. the expertise, it wouldn't

take long to get it together. >> bill: we have a couple of related stories to the bombers. the first one is a sound bite from the father from russia. roll the tape. >> somebody clearly framed them. i don't know who exactly framed them but they did. they framed them and then they were so cowardly that they shot the boy dead. there are policemen like that. >> bill: okay. we're going to discount that but we need to show you, you know, pretty much what this is. do we have bill -- okay, now, as i asked howie carr, is there vengeance in the air? and everybody processes this kind of stuff differently. let's bring in bill fore, a close family friend of the richard family. 8-year-old martin richard was killed by the bombers and his mother and his sister also injured. first of all, can you give us an update on the mom and the sister, mr. fore sure
5:40 pm
both denise the mom and jane the 7-year-old sister of martin who we lost are stable in boston hospitals. they are recovering. jane lost a limb, she lost ler leg. denise took an injury to her head. they are both stable and in the hospital recovering. >> bill: now. this must be some kind of relief to the family that they got these guys. can you tell us any further reaction? >> sure, i didn't talk to the richard family tonight about. this but i did talk to the husband of another victim from our neighborhood, the neighborhood right next to ours madapan. his wife lost her leg. he told me tonight he does not want this suspect killed on the scene. he wants to know what happened. he wants this suspect taken into custody if possible and he -- you know, he was adamant about his respect and add mifer ration for law enforcement. we are a law and order community in door chester, we have many law enforcement point of the

spear folks who robert scene there i think everybody is hoping they go k. get this guy alive. >> bill: they want to know from soup to nuts, top to bottom why this senseless garbage happened. >> right. >> bill: mr. richard is very well respected man in dorchester. dorchester working neighborhood in boston. everybody knows him. he does a lot of good for the community. how is he handling the death of his 8-year-old son and the grievous injury to his wife and daughter? >> bill, he is devastated. and, you know, he has asked us, the media, including me to respect his privacy right now. we have. he has very close friends around him at his side. he has been visited, of course, by governor patrick and others at the hospital. is he getting the support he needs. but the family has been quite clear that they do want the community at large and nation to be respectful
5:42 pm
their grief right now and provide them with space. >> bill: absolutely. if there is anything we can do for them, bill, let us know. >> you bet. >> bill: bill we assume there will be relief efforts for all the families involved in this as there should be. we will be in the forefront of that. we appreciate you coming on tonight. >> thanks, bill. >> bill: now, heard has some information about there is a hostage negotiator now when i say hostage negotiator. this is a person trained in trying to persuade people to do things. and they are trying to persuade this guy to come out on his own. >> the "boston globe" is reporting that their photographer can hear the police negotiator saying we know you are in there, come out on your own terms. come out with your hands up. >> bill: okay. >> they can hear that conversation goi this backyard where dzhokhar, the 19-year-old, who is apparently wounded is hold up. >> bill: all right. let's go back to the live coverage from our affiliated station channel 25 in boston. >> people out here have big
5:43 pm
smiles on heir faces. i will tell you why. we heard the police officer saying suspect in custody. suspect in custody. i reached over to a law enforcement source of mine and i said "did you get him?" he says we got him. big smile and thumbs up he said "we got him." that's amazing. >> that is wonderful news, jared. that was something that tom was about to tell me moments ago but you actually had it right there for us and we appreciate that the suspect is indeed in custody. and we thank goodwin by the way the neighbor who was with us on the phone had had provided all those details about what led up to it today. the suspect is in custody. suspect number 2 we believe from the boston marathon bombings on monday. the younger brother of suspect 1 who perished in a shootout last night with police. >> again, a tense scene just wrapping up at 67 franklin street as we watch the ambulance drive away which we assume possibly suspect number 2 is in that
5:44 pm
ambulance going away. he is under arrest. big smiles on the cops. we heard there was a lot of applause. this has been a long investigation. the day has been incredible with 20 shots fired, explosions. and a suspect hold up at 67 franklin street. a hostage negotiator came on scene and moments later we heard there was an arrest. >> exactly right. moments tonight where everyone cheered and you can imagine the exhale in watertown tonight and indeed all of boston and massachusetts and really across the country to know that the second suspect has been taken into custody and this is the ambulance leaving now. we understood he was injured. we were told that he had obviously injuries that were -- we don't know if they were life threatening or not but that he was definitely compromised. they found him in the boat tonight. they surrounded him. they sent in a robot. they ultimately decided, you know, it was time for himself to give up and he did. >> that is right. suspect number 2. if you are just turning on
5:45 pm
right now, suspect number 2 has been arrested after a long negotiation and a stand-up outside of franklin street in watertown. let's go to bob ward. >> what a great moment. we knew that applause had to signify something and it did. jared holbrook confirmed, i also got it confirmed from one of the law enforcement out there saying that he is in custody. >> bob, that's just tremendous news. what a relief for everyone in the state of massachusetts as i said earlier. and certainly for people like the victims' families and -- who lost so much. people who lost limbs and everything else to know that these two perpetrators are off the streets. and i -- i would talk to you more about this in a moment. i wanted to see if weekend bring in jared holbrook. did you have a chance to see inside that ambulance at all we saw the ambulance pass by i was sitting there itch watching home video he
5:46 pm
that somebody shot right next let me interrupted here i'm hearing applause from the crowd right now. applause from the crowd. everybody is screaming yea they are excited somebody shot on cell phone right next to where the gunshots were going off right there our friend paul talking about the series of gunshots, i heard them on this home video. >> jared, let me interrupt you, boston police have confirmed this as well people need to hear suspect number 2 is in custody and they can breathe a sigh of relief. >> jared, if you are still there i think what was -- i thought it was so concerning that we didn't know how this was going to
5:47 pm
tend: we heard 20 to 30 shots. some 15 minutes later we heard a number of explosions there was a concern thattics explosives may have been strapped to his body. it's just interesting how this has unfolded. the question is where is the suspect right now? because, you know, we can't get that close to the scene obviously. no one can but the press. you wonder if potentially this suspect is in an ambulance that's coming by. i put that to bob and jared if they have any type of vantage point to know whether or not he has driven out already if he is on the way out if he indeed needs to be in a ambulance or just in a cruiser at this point. >> mark, i see three cruisers leave nobody in the backseat right now. i would imagine if he is injured and he is going to be in an ambulance and i would imagine they are going to take him to a hospital nearby and with it get him treated for his injuries. it's -- it's very important for them that they get him alive. all the information that this man may have about any
5:48 pm
possible future cells or anything. >> bill: all right. so we are at the climbs climb max of the story. dzhokhar tsarnaev and tamerlan tsarnaev. dzhokhar in custody. we don't know how bad he is he is injured. come out from the boat he was hiding in the suburb of watertown. he apparently had some kind of explosive components with him. but we will shortly know exactly how the arrests was made. so i don't want to speculate it wastes your time and wastes my time and makes me look like an idiot so i don't want to speculate. what we will tell you is this. this man will be charged with capital murder in a federal court and this man will be executed by the united states of america. i will guarantee that this
5:49 pm
evening. you concur? >> i definitely concur as from your lips to god's ears and i'm sure it will happen just as timothy mcveigh was executed mass murder. this is absolutely despicable crime. they put that bag, that bomb right next to that 8-year-old. they knew exactly that what they were doing. they put it at street level. they knew they were going to cut legs off. they were richly deserving of ultimate punishment. >> bill: we want to basically you don't want to forget about the police officers who responded to the shootout last night. and 33-year-old richard donahue seriously injured right now. fighting for his life in the hospital. and mit police officer is dead. shot dead by this guy sean collier. so, look. the brother is in hell, fine. this guy is going to be in hell. it's just a matter of when. and we're happy about it. >> we are the big picture now is this is the new face
5:50 pm
of islamic terrorists. you think it's homegrown? i do. whether they are born here as anwar al-awlaki or nidal hasan or brought here at young age like this guy 8 years old. brother 13 years old and radicalized as they matured, this is where it will come from. al qaeda has no capability right now to mount the sophisticated attacks. we have disrupted al qaeda central but it is the self-motivated radicals that are the new danger. >> bill: let's go to shepard smith in watertown, massachusetts. what say you? >> >> bill, a quick 10 minute drive over here from downtown boston on a night where the streets are still empty across. we were listening as you were to fox 25 here in boston as the word came down that, in fact, is he in custody and has been taken away from that scene. i think there are a lot of things we have yet to learn, bill. we don't know about the rest of that facility there. we don't know about these explosions that happened. we haven't yet heard from police on other matters regarding the possibility
5:51 pm
of these other three who were taken into custody tonight. two men and a woman for questioning. whether that is related or not remains to be seen. i'm turning around because we are waiting to see where the suspect ends up and a long night ahead. of course, authorities have said they are sending that row bought in to make sure that there are no unexploded ordnance in there, our sources are saying they are going to go very slowly at that crime scene tonight. for bostonians at least and america suspect number 2 in custody this might be the first good night sleep. >> bill: his brother was taken last night after the shootout in watertown to beth israel hospital. and the doctor who treated him, richard wolf, said that not only did he have gunshot wounds but he had explosive wounds as well. and he expired in the hospital, this guy. i assume he will be taken to beth israel as well. they have a trauma unit there that deals with this kind of stuff.
5:52 pm
>> shepard: indeed. >> bill: i'm speculating now but it's educated speculation. it will be interesting to see if dr. wolf treats this guy. but they do obviously want to keep him alive because we really for the family's sake need the answers and how this whole thing evolved and if geraldo is right, that this is the wave of the future, these fanatics coming here and killing at this level, you know, it's a chilling thing. they see this in israel all the time. you know, this is how israelis live. ened and the united states certainly don't want to get into that shepard, you are going to be hanging for the entire evening, right? and the information in boston is going to flow through you. because i want to set up the rest of the schedule for the viewers of fox news. we're going to be on this story probably all night. and into tomorrow morning. shepard is a point man out in boston. it's all going to go through you, right? >> shepard: we're waiting now, bill, to hear from authorities. i think it's important, especially on a night like this for us not to get ahead of ourselves on this
5:53 pm
matter. we do not know what inspired these men. the fact that he is alive may give police and investigators from the fbi a wealth of information about how this happened. it's fine to speculate about how you believe the older brother may have radicalized the younger. if the younger brother is able to be able to be kept alive we may find out through the work of the investigators who worked tirelessly here since monday. we know the order of business here now. we don't know whether his injuries -- the injuries he sustained last night are the only ones. we know there was this overnight gun fight that harassment we know they found bloody clothes and some blood in that shed there where the boat was. we don't yet know if this fire fight tonight if he was returning fire there were great concerns whether he might have been wearing some sort of suicide vest as authorities tell us his brother was when he this found him last night. we don't know if he was injured again tonight. we can hope that these are not life-threatening injuries. and authorities will be able to find out. i think it would be very worthwhile to learn how it
5:54 pm
was that these two men became radicalized rather than having to speculate about such a thing. maybe authorities can actually find out, bill. >> bill: i hope so. mike tobin is doing all he can to find out what's going on. he joins us on the phone now. what do you know, mike? >> when i know is a pretty emotional scene out here. as close as we can get to the scene where the onlookers have crowded up. what i have seen in the last developments came about is they crowded around the radio. very world war ii like. as they heard the developments they would cheer. pretty soon people would hug each other. now what i'm seeing is the cops stream out of the scene one by one. people are cheering for the police officers. they have a lot of people out here with a pretty heavyweight lifted off their shoulders, the chance to go outside again and expressing the gratitude for all of the police officers who put themselves in harm's way to make sure it could happen. >> bill: we might also alert our viewers there is going to be a big press conference -- >> -- you know, bill, i'm looking at a medical
5:55 pm
vehicle coming out right now. i can't tell if it's the one. that would be carrying him but i'm watching medical vehicle come up mount auburn street. it's watertown fire department and a big cheer is going out. >> bill: okay. you hang down there, mike, and we appreciate it as i was saying that we are going to have some clarification of something. but authorities are very, very careful about not giving out too much information. obviously the guy is not going to be interrogated until they stabilize him physically.
5:56 pm
as far as instructing americans on what we are likely to see in the future here. the war on terror carries on. we all hope it would go away. but the jihad is still there. people still hate us for no reason at all. this is just a really a shocking, shocking situation. the united states was so generous to this family. so generous and kind to them. and they he turn and do this. and that 8-year-old boy, martin richard is going to be the poster guy. that is going to is symbolize all that the jihaddists stand for. it is him. >> i was at a reception the israeli council general gave for the commission of israel, i asked him what he thought the implications of the
5:57 pm
decentralized terror threat would be. are you in favor of surveillance cameras on every street corner in every major city and he said, yes, we have those in israel and they work and look how it paid that you this case. i spoke with the three term mayor of boston who went on to become ambassador to it the vatican and i said how you do you protect your people against a vicious killer who chooses soft targets. he said it is going to be like times square on new year's eve you can't bring nap sacks or duffle bags into the public gatherings. we have is to alter the way we behave. i asked the israeli police commissioner whether he thought that was the case. he said because these were few and far between it might be too steep a price for america to pay. will america become israel as we go forward and have the threats. few but deadly when they happen and disruptive when they happen. boston lost a billion dollars worth of business the last several days. how are we going to fight this
5:58 pm
this? i think we need the surveillance cameras and need to see something and say something to spread everywhere. >> bill: as i said last night in the tip of the day we all should go to boston. we allhood go. this summer go. >> a great town. >> bill: and you learn a lot and bring money into the local economy there. that is -- i'm going. i always go. but i'm going even more. anyway, we want to leave on an upbeat note on the factor tonight. our authorities did a great job. took only five days to bring the men to justice. one dead and the other wounded and in custody. we are hoping that there isn't anything else. there are three other people being talked to. they roomed apparently with the younger man at a college, the university of massachusetts
5:59 pm
dartmouth. not dartmouth college. new bedford federal authorities picked them up. executed a search warrant on the room to find out whatever. and they will piece it together fairly quickly about what happened and why it would happen. we will have coverage all a throughout tonight. all throughout the weekend. geraldo, geraldo you are on tomorrow it night. >> sunday night. >> bill: but you are hanging around, we are not letting you go home. we are developing sources on all different areas. happen this could happen to be over for the families of the victims. a tremendous relief that they may learn something now about why all this happened. it is very important for people who grieve to know. it is very important. most of us have grieved in our lives and you know how important that is. that we can know, all right. and now we have a good chance to find out why this 19-year-old would blow up an 8-year-old. and how that all came down. we have a very good chance of finding that out. once again, thank you for watching the o
